Kathleen Hitchner 7/27/2023 2:44 PMThat's a great point, Victoria. My township only takes #s 1&2. But I keep my 3's through 7's separate and take them to my mom's house whenever I visit, and I put them in her recycle bin, because her town takes them. We have to get creative! LOL!

Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Kitchen
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Kitchen
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 1 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.

Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 30 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.

Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 30 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 2 piece(s) of litter each day.
Family + Pets
Discover Together
I will spend 20 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 1 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Bedroom
Eco Detergent
I will use laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Coffee Pods
Instead of using disposable coffee pods such as K-cups I will use a reusable version. This will prevent single use plastic from going to the landfill.
Family + Pets
Switch to Reusable "Paper" Towels
Instead of single use paper towels my family will switch to reusable "unpaper" or cloth towels.
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Community
Tour A Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 30 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.
Bathroom
Use Sustainable Menstrual Products
Switch to reusable products, such as cups, underwear, or reusable pads.

Victoria Hyland 7/31/2023 2:13 PMWe made it to the last day! Great work everyone! :) -
Victoria Hyland 7/30/2023 7:51 PMI almost forgot to check in today! I did not do much but even little things count! -
Victoria Hyland 7/29/2023 12:28 PMHi all! I'm finishing this Eco Challenge by spending some time outdoors (even though it is SUPER hot outside). I went for a walk in my local county park and decided to pick up any trash I saw which luckily was not very much at all! I hope you all have a nice weekend :)-

Victoria Hyland 7/28/2023 6:18 AMHi all! Last Friday of the challenge. We should all be really proud of how well we have done! Hopefully we can all finish strong over the weekend :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWere you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?
Victoria Hyland 7/27/2023 10:44 AMAfter watching the facility tour, I wanted to brush up on what the numbers on plastics meant. I wasn't surprised by what these numbers meant, but I am glad I looked into it because not all recycling centers take all plastics, so it is always good to know what you are trying to recycle and if your local recycling facility accepts the material. I will try to avoid plastics that my recycling facility does not accept. -
Victoria Hyland 7/27/2023 10:39 AMI really enjoyed the recycling facility tour! I learned a lot. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityLandfills and recycling centers tell us a lot about our communities and purchasing habits. What did you glean from your tour?
Victoria Hyland 7/27/2023 10:38 AMI learned that bagged recycling cannot be recycled. I don't think I ever knew that! I also learned the process of sorting that needs to be done for each different recycled item: cardboard, paper, glass, and 1-7 plastics. -
Victoria Hyland 7/26/2023 6:23 AMI had to step away from the challenge for a few days, but I am back and retroactively checking in for past days!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Victoria Hyland 7/21/2023 9:01 AMTo avoid participating in fast fashion you can alter the clothes you already have by pinning them in different ways. You can also express creativity and personality through trying different hairstyles or makeup looks. Clothes are not the only thing that make us unique.-
Kathleen Hitchner 7/22/2023 8:49 PMThose are great ideas, Victoria! I also mend clothes that are ripped, have missing buttons or have a broken zipper, rather than discarding them. I donate or hand down clothes that are good shape, but don't fit me anymore. When something is truly unusable, I take them to textile recycling collection facilities.
