Hi all! I'm finishing this Eco Challenge by spending some time outdoors (even though it is SUPER hot outside). I went for a walk in my local county park and decided to pick up any trash I saw which luckily was not very much at all! I hope you all have a nice weekend :)

Were you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?

After watching the facility tour, I wanted to brush up on what the numbers on plastics meant. I wasn't surprised by what these numbers meant, but I am glad I looked into it because not all recycling centers take all plastics, so it is always good to know what you are trying to recycle and if your local recycling facility accepts the material. I will try to avoid plastics that my recycling facility does not accept.

That's a great point, Victoria. My township only takes #s 1&2. But I keep my 3's through 7's separate and take them to my mom's house whenever I visit, and I put them in her recycle bin, because her town takes them. We have to get creative! LOL!

I really enjoyed the recycling facility tour! I learned a lot.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
Landfills and recycling centers tell us a lot about our communities and purchasing habits. What did you glean from your tour?

    Victoria Hyland's avatar
    Victoria Hyland 7/27/2023 10:38 AM
I learned that bagged recycling cannot be recycled. I don't think I ever knew that! I also learned the process of sorting that needs to be done for each different recycled item: cardboard, paper, glass, and 1-7 plastics.

How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Victoria Hyland's avatar
    Victoria Hyland 7/21/2023 9:01 AM
To avoid participating in fast fashion you can alter the clothes you already have by pinning them in different ways. You can also express creativity and personality through trying different hairstyles or makeup looks. Clothes are not the only thing that make us unique.

Those are great ideas, Victoria! I also mend clothes that are ripped, have missing buttons or have a broken zipper, rather than discarding them. I donate or hand down clothes that are good shape, but don't fit me anymore. When something is truly unusable, I take them to textile recycling collection facilities.
