Jamie Horning 7/31/2023 11:55 AMI have been advertising this challenge to work colleagues for consideration as a Plastic Free July activity for 2024. Great interactive webpage and I appreciate the team concept. Thank you to all the sponsors and content developers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Jamie Horning 7/31/2023 11:52 AMNo travel plans in July; however, I did sort thru my toiletries and travel size toiletries to donate and organize to limit future spending. I also purchased empty containers to re-fill from the larger containers to avoid travel size purchases. Baby steps! -
Jamie Horning 7/26/2023 3:08 PMTrying to buy foods with minimal packaging - having some success. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?
Jamie Horning 7/26/2023 2:58 PMPlastic production provides jobs. Plastic production can cause a "convenience" culture. Balance and more research to sort/recycle/re-use plastic is important.-
Joanna Caputa 7/26/2023 3:42 PMI agree! There is an entire economy around creating plastics. And you are SO right that it encourages a convenience culture! What a truth you are speaking. If people only stopped to think that some things that are important are not necessarily convenient. It requires a mature reassessment of our values.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Jamie Horning 7/22/2023 12:54 PMStill working on it! We purchase many items already in minimal packaging. Trying to get in the habit of going to fresh meat counter to reduce Styrofoam packaging. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyAs you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?
Jamie Horning 7/22/2023 12:52 PMWatching online purchasing and striving for "replacement" items only. Have saved money on some products. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
Jamie Horning 7/22/2023 12:50 PMWe do create paper waste (mail, newspaper, magazines, etc.) We recycle paper. We also have a mini composter that we are now utilizing more (food scraps). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Jamie Horning 7/18/2023 10:10 AMI am express my personality, creativity and values with my words and actions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenDo an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?
Jamie Horning 7/18/2023 10:08 AMMy inventory revealed that ~ 30% of packaging of food products are in single use plastic. For the near future, this will continue as we live in an area with limited options (options are coming in 2-4 years). I will continue to look for Farmer's markets and make good decisions on my purchases -
Jamie Horning 7/08/2023 1:32 PMRestaurants using styrofoam to go containers a challenge. Will bring my own container (glass) next time eating out. Doing well on minimizing food waste and storing left overs in glass containers.
