I have been advertising this challenge to work colleagues for consideration as a Plastic Free July activity for 2024. Great interactive webpage and I appreciate the team concept. Thank you to all the sponsors and content developers.

What is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?

No travel plans in July; however, I did sort thru my toiletries and travel size toiletries to donate and organize to limit future spending. I also purchased empty containers to re-fill from the larger containers to avoid travel size purchases. Baby steps!

Plastic production provides jobs. Plastic production can cause a "convenience" culture. Balance and more research to sort/recycle/re-use plastic is important.

I agree! There is an entire economy around creating plastics. And you are SO right that it encourages a convenience culture! What a truth you are speaking. If people only stopped to think that some things that are important are not necessarily convenient. It requires a mature reassessment of our values.

With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

Still working on it! We purchase many items already in minimal packaging. Trying to get in the habit of going to fresh meat counter to reduce Styrofoam packaging.

We do create paper waste (mail, newspaper, magazines, etc.) We recycle paper. We also have a mini composter that we are now utilizing more (food scraps).

Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

My inventory revealed that ~ 30% of packaging of food products are in single use plastic. For the near future, this will continue as we live in an area with limited options (options are coming in 2-4 years). I will continue to look for Farmer's markets and make good decisions on my purchases

Restaurants using styrofoam to go containers a challenge. Will bring my own container (glass) next time eating out. Doing well on minimizing food waste and storing left overs in glass containers.
