Autumn's actions
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Bathroom
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 20 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Family + Pets
Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.
Kitchen
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 5 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.

Autumn Hilden 7/31/2023 2:29 PMHad a party over the weekend and decided to keep it as free of plastic as possible. I noticed two things. One, the whole thing felt very elevated with the plastic missing! Yay! Lots of positive feedback on how nice it looked. Two, I was STUNNED when we went to take out the trash and recycling the next morning. Normally we have to plan to make sure there's enough room in the bins to handle post-party aftermath. This time, BOTH the garbage AND the recycling were almost empty!! We had 20 people over! What!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHad you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?
Autumn Hilden 7/31/2023 2:24 PMWhen I was kid we did an experiment with my elementary school that involved writing a note, sticking it inside a ballon, and releasing the balloon in hopes that it would be found and the replied to. Kind of like a message in a bottle. Even then I was like, "Isn't this just trash we're leaving, though?" I've read casually on the harmful effects in my adulthood, but I am anxious to get actual stats. Didn't do it this week as planned. -

Autumn Hilden 7/25/2023 9:05 AMDoes anyone know if there's a way to request paper bags for grocery pickup? Why do they always bring you 40,000 plastic bags? I don't need a whole plastic bag for a single jar of salsa and then a separate plastic bag for one box of cereal.-
Sam Peterson 7/25/2023 9:30 AMIt depends where you're shopping, but at HEB they give you the option to place a note in your order. I always request paper bags and to not pack everything separately. It helps at least some of the time!

Autumn Hilden 7/25/2023 9:03 AMIt's hard to stay focused as the month gets busier and busier, but I can feel some habits forming. Getting to that place of automatic behavior is one of my goals for this challenge. -
Autumn Hilden 7/21/2023 1:59 PMToday I'm thinking about drive-through beverages. I love and look forward to grabbing a Coke Zero when I'm going to be on a longer drive to somewhere, but it's less and less common for my drinks to come in paper cups. A lot of times it's plastic now. Maybe I'll start keeping track of which places use which containers. At some places, it even varies depending on which size you order. It might be a little work up front, but I'm pretty motivated on this because I get to-go drinks a lot.-
Lisa Brenskelle 7/28/2023 3:46 PMToo bad the to-go drinks vendors don't generally allow you to bring your own refillable beverage container. Coffee places used to permit this (not sure if they still do), but never saw it for cold drinks.

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyHow has learning about the history of single-use plastic shifted your mindset on plastics and their function within society?
Autumn Hilden 7/21/2023 1:45 PMEverything has benefits and drawbacks. I can see why we went to plastics, but now that we know more, we can pivot to the next--hopefully better--thing. -
Autumn Hilden 7/20/2023 3:38 PMFun to get everyone pumped up at the all-staff meeting today and to enjoy a plastic-free event! -
Autumn Hilden 7/17/2023 10:29 AMSo glad for my reusable cup on hot Zoo days like the ones we've been having. -
Autumn Hilden 7/17/2023 10:24 AMGot my neighbor to start using his recycling bin!! Next step: actually breaking down the boxes...
