Makenna's actions
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 10 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Kitchen
Vermicomposting
To create and sustain a DIY worm bin. Creating my own compost and disposing of food and paper wastes in a way that gives back to my environment by creating compost for a garden.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by sharing about them on my social media networks and the Plastic Free Ecochallenge participant feed.
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Bathroom
Pearly Whites
I will switch to a plastic-free toothpaste — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Community
Donate Zero Waste Period Products
I will donate 10 zero waste period kits to young people with periods so that they can reduce their waste and the financial burden of menstruation while continuing their education.
Kitchen
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Kitchen
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Bedroom
replace sponges
replace with natural compostable or biodegradable substance
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Bathroom
Toothbrush creativity
When it comes time to replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo one, I will sanitize and use my old plastic toothbrush as a cleaning item!
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 15 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.

Makenna Griffith 7/31/2023 4:44 PMWoot woot! 4th place for me! It’s not about competition but I’m super proud of my first year participating! Thank you ABQ BIOPARK for the opportunity to create new habits and help make an impact! -
Makenna Griffith 7/31/2023 4:42 PMSo far (I had previously switched my laundry detergent before this challenge) I only got the opportunity to DIY dish washer detergent, surprisingly it works SUPER well my only issue so far is that the citric acid is really volatile and the moment it touches moisture it foams so I have to throw the powder in quickly and close the door and start the cycle SUPER quick. I definitely recommend it my recipe is 1 cup washing soda, 1 cup borax, 1/2 cup citric acid, 1/2 cup course salt for anyone that wants to try it! I wound up making 6 cups total and I’ve done Al about ten washes and still have a BUNCH left from my initial batch :)-

REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomCurrently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?
Makenna Griffith 7/31/2023 4:37 PMI’m so upset! I have SO MUCH toothpaste in my house that I wasn’t able to even get a chance to get a new plastic free one or even make a toothpaste! Well I guess it’ll have to be my august goal :) -
Makenna Griffith 7/30/2023 8:24 PMAlmost done! I’m so happy with all the new habits I’ve created, knowledge I’ve learned and impact we have all made together! -
Makenna Griffith 7/28/2023 2:18 PMToday I signed up for TOFU/Stripe a third party company that helps me with collecting payment/sending invoices. Best part about it 1% of my earnings is now going to support our climate! Pretty nifty! -
Makenna Griffith 7/26/2023 8:39 PMTrying to finish out strong! Today was a Costco run super impressed at how their meat bags are 60% recycled material and compostable, unimpressed with the people leaving litter in the parking lot TO INCLUDE a single use plastic bottle -___- no plastic bags but tons of litter 🙃 -
Makenna Griffith 7/25/2023 8:24 PMSo I was really strong in the beginning of the month, work has been SUPER crazy lately I haven’t been getting home earlier then 6 pm 😢 either way over the weekend I made a fake wedding cake for an event and was pleased to see the **cough cough** plastic foam rounds were made entirely out of recycled plastic! My only disappointment is that they flaked a little bit which means PLASTIC PARTICLES IN OUR WATER!! Makes me super angry especially when I’ve been trying to improve my habits not make them worse! BUT on the positive side my dish detergent FINALLY ran out today so now I’m making a homemade recipe that’s eco friendly! I’m also curious about others opinions on finishing supplies that you’ve bought/using leftovers people give you like lotions, and potions and things? I feel like I’m being positive because I’m using the entire product instead of buying a new one and having another single use plastic to deal with but at the same time some of the products may have micro beads and that’s just a big NO GO. Happy Tuesday sorry for the huge post please enjoy the picture of my first ever BOHO themed wedding cake :) -
Makenna Griffith 7/22/2023 9:11 PMWent to a plant swap this AM unfortunately it started earlier then I thought but I loved seeing all the creative recycling of plastic containers to propagate plants! I used an old sour cream tub to transport my duckweed and donated it to the teachers/staff of the school that hosted it -
Makenna Griffith 7/20/2023 6:51 PMWell, the boyfriend has learned to stop getting me a plastic straw, one of these days I’ll get him on my side -
Makenna Griffith 7/19/2023 10:37 AMToday I think I’ll go for an evening walk and collect trash, I noticed there’s a lot more out than usual. Something I hate is that glass is recyclable but it’s too expensive and the garbage collectors on base will take any glass someone put in their recycling bin and line it up on the sidewalks. People don’t see them right away or just leave it and then it becomes glass shards on the side of the road :(
