Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Community
Donate Zero Waste Period Products
I will donate 5 zero waste period kits to young people with periods so that they can reduce their waste and the financial burden of menstruation while continuing their education.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day.
Bathroom
Plastic free floss
I use bamboo floss which is not packaged in plastic.
Community
Free the Ocean
Freetheocean is a great website which will pickup one piece of plastic on a beach for every person who plays their daily trivia game…my goal is to log in to this website every day, play the trivia game, and thereby remove plastic from the ocean.
Bedroom
Catch Those Microfibers
I will use a microfiber catcher in my laundry, or install a microfiber filter for my washing machine.
Kitchen
dishwasher soap
I stopped using dishwasher pellets (made with plastic) a coupld of years ago. I now use Cleancult, which are lemongrass tablets made with no harsh chemicals. I only run my dishwasher once/month because I don't have many dirty dishes but at least when I use it there is no plastic added to the water stream.
Study
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 5 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Family + Pets
Dog Poop
I will continue to pick up other people's dog poop even after Plastic Free July

Sevilleta Annual Butterfly Count
• Saturday, August 12, 2022
• 9am-2pm
Would you like to help the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge survey butterflies? Each year, the refuge conducts a survey and submits the data to the North American Butterfly Association, which maintains long term records of butterfly populations around the country. If you would like to participate, please send an email to Colin Barnett, President, Amigos de la Sevilleta, [email protected]. Put Butterfly Count in the Subject field. -

Christina Gonzalez 7/29/2023 7:58 AMIt amazes me that the BioPark team is so close to 11th place, considering that we have about 1/2 of the participants that team has! As of a few minutes ago, we are just a little over 400 points behind...come on Team BioPark just a couple more days!-

Christina Gonzalez 7/28/2023 8:56 AMA good news story to keep us motivated:
The Summer Olympics in Paris is making news – the seats are crafted from locally recycled plastic, these seats are sustainability champions in their own right. The bulk of the plastic, about 80% of the required 100 metric tons, was sourced directly from Seine-Saint-Denis. Two ingenious companies, Lemon Tri and Le Pavé, kept the entire process—from collection to processing—in the neighborhood, making it a community-driven recycling initiative.-
Laurie Lacey 7/30/2023 1:13 PMThanks for pointing out the use of plastics in construction - something consumers don’t give enough weight to.

Christina Gonzalez 7/27/2023 10:44 AMIn the spirit of reduce, reuse, recycle here is a great idea: Vets and shelters are often in need of things like baby socks and onesies in their day-to-day operations. You might want to think about sharing them with an animal hospital to help some pet in their recovery process. Think about it: Baby socks are the perfect size for dogs and cats. So are onesies. They’re generally lightweight and easy to slip on and off while being perfect for protecting surgery sites. Additionally, shelters, rescues, and vets can always use things like sheets, towels, and blankets as long as they’re not stuffed with cotton batting.-
