Were you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?

I knew the different numbers corresponded to different types of plastics, but I had no idea how many of these types of plastic were difficult or virtually impossible to recycle. In addition to trying to limit my single-use plastic use, I am also going to check numbers before I buy things to try and avoid the harder to recycle plastics as much as possible.

I can't believe that tomorrow is the last day of July! Even though the ecochallenge will be over soon, I plan to continue to try and continue to reduce my reliance on single use plastics. My reusable grocery bags, water bottle, and straw and my bamboo cutlery definitely have a permanent place in my bag.

I know! It honestly flew by. It's gonna be weird not to have to check in everyday.

Had you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?

I already knew that balloons were bad for the environment, but I'd never spent much time looking into possible balloon alternatives. Next time my family gets together for a birthday party or other celebration, I definitely plan to bring up some of these more environmentally friendly options. Several members of my family enjoy doing crafts and kids' birthday parties often involve some kind of activity. I think a reusable water balloon fight would make a great addition to our next summer bbq. I'd never heard of crocheted balloons before and I can't wait to try them out!

How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

    Erin Glant's avatar
    Erin Glant 7/13/2023 7:18 AM
Instead of packing my lunch in a sandwich bag, I have begun using reusable containers. It may not be the most creative solution, but it definitely keeps plastic bags out of landfills!

I just bought my first reusable metal straw. I can't wait to try it out!

How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

This has always been surprisingly tricky for me because I would constantly forget to grab a reusable bags whenever I went to the store. I decided to fold one of them up and store it in my workbag (which I use a bit like a purse) and, since then, I haven't had any more issues as I almost always have at least one reusable bag on me.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Why do you chew gum? What habits could replace and meet your reasons for chewing gum?

    Erin Glant's avatar

I tend to chew gum when my mouth is dry. Instead of chewing gum, I am going to try and start drinking more water (from a reusable water bottle of course :) ). Not only will this help avoid plastic, but it will help me stay healthy and hydrated!
