Olivia's actions
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 3 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Bathroom
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.
Bathroom
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Community
Host a Watch Party
I will host a watch party with friends and/or colleagues to watch and discuss a movie about plastics.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 10 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 15 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Bedroom
Donate Lightly Used Clothing
Instead of throwing away clothes that are no longer worn but still in good condition, donate clothes at a local thrift store or shelter.
Family + Pets
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Study
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 15 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 3 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Bathroom
See the Green
I will recycle used contact lenses and packaging.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Kitchen
Swap the Snacks

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?
Olivia George 7/31/2023 9:36 AMMy ecological footprint is definitely not the best, and I expect it will weigh on me and slowly over time I will figure out how to continue improving. Sudden changes are not lasting changes, so I definitely prefer to give myself the grace of time so I make the best, most reasonable choice for me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about bioplastic production and disposal? Did anything surprise you? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?
Olivia George 7/31/2023 9:21 AMBioplastics are not a perfect solution, but they are a step in the right direction. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
Olivia George 7/31/2023 9:20 AMI can definitely reduce waste in the amount of pre-packaged snacks and foods I eat. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWere you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?
Olivia George 7/31/2023 9:19 AMIt is definitely frustrating that not every number can be readily recycled, but knowing which ones reliably can be recycled is the best I can do as an individual. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does hosting a watch party help you to get to know your guests, connect them to the cause you are focusing on, and build your community?
Olivia George 7/31/2023 9:18 AMIt helps everyone to relate over this topic, which is something most people care about on some level. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?
Olivia George 7/31/2023 9:17 AMThis topic is frustrating because it feels like the problem is larger than what I personally can affect. But it is great knowing that more companies are starting to take this into consideration when making decisions and that ALL4 helps with that. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomHow can you advocate for the importance of reducing packaging to the rest of your friends, family and larger community?
Olivia George 7/31/2023 9:14 AMI think that comes down to mentioning solutions that work for the individual rather than giving general advice. Each person has different habits and preferences, and if a sustainable swap doesn't work within those, the swap won't stick. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Olivia George 7/31/2023 9:12 AMSometimes there are layers of plastic packaging to package the collective and individual products. Not necessary. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?
Olivia George 7/31/2023 9:12 AMFresh fruits and veggies are healthier than processed snacks anyway. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
