Numbers Everywhere

The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom
The simple act of hang drying your laundry can be an act of mindfulness. Where else in your daily routine can you make mindfulness a practice?

I can stop to think about what I really need, such as if I really need a ride to the store or can I walk, and also think more about what I'm buying and where it's coming from.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study
What did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?

I learned that my ecological footprint is 4.9 which is apparently not great because if everyone lived like me we'd apparently need 3 Earths--definitely a shock to me and I thought that I was doing okay.

I don't personally drive but I am a passenger a lot, I'm thinking that instead of taking rides I can walk more and buy a bike. We usually fix what we have and purchase at thrift stores a lot, but I can try to make sure what we have is energy efficient. I could also limit the A/C usage.

I didn't actually pick the 30 pieces of trash today, I was actually at the park with my kids for a group picnic yesterday and found myself picking up all the trash I saw on the ground. I was able to get them to help too, we made it a game and there were around 13 plastic star things (I assume from a party of some kind since it was by the pavilion), 5 plastic bottles, 6 chip bags, 1 diaper (I picked that one up), and 5 candy wrappers. I couldn't get the website to open on my phone though so I'm only checking in today. The kids also went around reminding people to throw their trash in the garbage and to make sure it goes in the bin. Fun day! Don't worry, they washed their hands and played a bunch too lol

I really have to pay attention to what I'm doing right now but hopefully this will all become second nature!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

In what ways does your pet make your life happier, more interesting, or more rewarding?

My dog and cat are complete characters and always make me laugh with their shenanigans. The unconditional love is a bonus too. For me and my kids <3 Especially when they cheer up my kids and/or stop a meltdown.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study
As you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?

    Lisa Garriott's avatar
    Lisa Garriott 7/05/2023 6:31 AM
With less random purchases, I notice that I pay more attention to what I'm buying and how much packaging is in it. I'm not sure that I'm saving money, but I'm putting my money into better purchases.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study
How might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?

    Lisa Garriott's avatar

I honestly had to look this up, but as I read about it it does make sense. I grew up in Southwest Detroit and even now when I go back, almost everything in restaurants are sent out in styrofoam and pollution in general was high--my best friend lived right outside a factory and the entire neighborhood smelled like a morgue. Where I live now, most carry outs are cardboard boxes and very few places I go give you styrofoam and a few give you options. I didn't have those options when I lived in a predominately black and Latinx area.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

This wasn't too difficult, the hardest part is remembering to bring the reusable bags. It was nice not having a bunch of plastic bags to throw away this trip.
