Amalia's actions
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Kitchen
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Kitchen
Better Gum
I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 10 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Study
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 10 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by sharing about them on my social media networks and the Plastic Free Ecochallenge participant feed.
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWere you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?
Amalia Friess 7/07/2023 5:42 AMFrom what I could find, only plastics #1 and #2 are reliably recycleable in Oklahoma City. This means that PVC, plastic film, styrofoam, and some household plastic containers are not recycleable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?
Amalia Friess 7/06/2023 2:24 PMI was surprised by how high my ecological footprint is. I learned that my biggest impact comes from the "shelter" category, which is unfortunately the most difficult to change in my opinion. I really think it shows how much consumption is built into our societal systems. -
Amalia Friess 7/06/2023 2:08 PMOne of the best things about summer is all the fresh fruit and veggies in season!! Naturally plastic free! -
Amalia Friess 7/03/2023 5:14 PMThe National Aquarium is hot on our tail, being less than 600 points behind. Let's keep our ranking!-
