Julie Mapes 7/30/2023 7:07 PMHi Patricia,
I liked when I purchased the silicone reusable zipper bags. I have some that you wash by hand or the dishwasher, and have endless uses in different sizes. Because they are thicker, I don't have to worry about a sharp chip puncturing a bag! -

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenDo an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?
Patricia Foster 7/30/2023 11:10 AMI have always been quick to use plastic baggies for everything - from lunches to toy parts. I recently purchased several small class containers with lids to replace those bags. I also have a few old jars that I can use to store household items. Although it won't change the worls overnight, I like that my family and especially my grandchildren -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyHow has learning about the history of single-use plastic shifted your mindset on plastics and their function within society?
Patricia Foster 7/28/2023 10:46 AMAs I was reading and watching to learn about single-use plastics, I couldn't help but make a mental inventory of the plastic items I always believed I couldn't live without. It wasn't as difficult as I imagined finding alternative eco-friendly options. Also, I remember when plastic furniture was marketed as cool and hip. Thankfully we now know better. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?
Patricia Foster 7/28/2023 10:35 AMI am embarrassed to say that I never thought about the entire plastics production process and the many ways it affects our lives. All my life, I have just accepted the ease and affordability of plastic goods but never considered the bigger picture. The most obvious impact in my immediate neighborhood is the disposal of single use plastics. The volume of objects that will unfortunately take up space indefinitely is astounding. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Patricia Foster 7/25/2023 10:30 AMIt seems as if the initial anger because of paper straws has lessened. I don’t see or hear nearly as many complaints as I did when we first moved to Gainesville. Changes in attitude takes time, and I just need to remember that. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?
Patricia Foster 7/17/2023 5:58 PMI was disappointed with my ecological footprint results but not surprised. This eco challenge has opened my eyes to how much learning I have yet to do.-
Joanna Caputa 7/18/2023 10:03 AMPatricia, me too. I feel like I've just scratched the tip of the iceberg with learning how to live more gently on this earth.
