We're halfway through the Plastic Free Ecochallenge! How are you feeling? What habits are you working on? What barriers have you come across?

I am avoiding ordering things from Amazon due to overpackaging as well as ethics. If you order from them only once in a while they will enroll you in prime. My brother has had to dispute this on his credit card. I helped out a neighbor and they gave me an Amazon gift card and I gave it a way so I would not have to go through this problem. The Federal Trade Commission has sued Amazon recently for duping millions of consumers into enrolling in Amazon Prime subscriptions without their knowledge and making it overly difficult to cancel. It would be so nice to be able purchase things in brick and mortar stores and support local business would better for our economy. Helping the environment, local economy and the (American Dream) support a local business.

I’m struggling with getting some items without using Amazon. They have so much packaging that I really try to avoid them as much as possible.

Decent plastic free toilet bowl cleaner and a good refillable deodorant! Everything else has been easy to find substitutes once I found an on line store that had "all or most" my product needs. Some zero waste stores are pretty "niche" and I didn't want tons of subscriptions, memberships or shipments.

Today I was able to refuse straws, and my reusable cup at a coffee shop.

How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Rue Pieper's avatar
    Rue Pieper 7/01/2023 9:22 PM
I think this question really ties into the Ted talk I listened to - wear the clothes in your closet you've been saving for a rainy day! The jewelry that might be "too much" should be worn if it makes you feel good. It's worth it to look in your own closet and seeing what you already have. Or set up a clothing swap in your friend group, or community!

My grandmother died with a cabinet full of sheets & towels she was saving for "good." They were rotten when I had to clean out her home. Very sad.... it could have been a touch of joy in her life to use and enjoy those items.

How can you advocate for the importance of reducing packaging to the rest of your friends, family and larger community?

    Rue Pieper's avatar

I think with this particular swap it helped that it was cute! Advocating that there are lotion companies that will put their products in tin containers from sustainable groups that value paying their employees a fair wage really helps put things in perspective. Did I mention the tin was very cute, too?!

As you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?

    Rue Pieper's avatar
    Rue Pieper 7/01/2023 8:53 PM
I like the idea of giving yourself time in between having the impulse to buy something and then waiting a few days or even a month to see if you still really want it. If you come back to it later, you know you really wanted it!

With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

    Rue Pieper's avatar
    Rue Pieper 7/01/2023 8:50 PM
This is a difficult task! It's helpful to come prepared with a list and shop a lot in the fresh produce section of the store.

    • Connie Peterson's avatar
      Connie Peterson 7/02/2023 12:47 PM
This is!! I only go to the grocery store every 2 weeks. Its difficult to keep fresh produce that long. I hate that the store does not have simple thing like bulk mushrooms vs packaged. And why must coffee be in those plastic cannisters? I have changed many brands, manufacturers need to be more responsible!!
