I just took a look at the leaderboard and saw that SCA is ahead of The Detroit Zoo (one of the places I used to work as a teen)! It made me chuckle, but I'm so happy to see we're all working together to make an impact for positive change!

With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

Single use items tend to be smaller and have to be bought more often, which puts a strain on the environment; vs reusable items which don't have to be bought often and are better for the environment.

Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

Instead of buying bottles of gatorade to consume, I switched to the powdered version to use as desired (many years ago), and found it produces far less waste (and I can use the empty containers for craft item storage), and takes up less room in the kitchen/fridge.

Hi Amber, I love that you do this! Sometimes the powder is hard to find so I love that you do this! We offer gatorade in large jugs during our litter sweeps as an option to water.

I may not be mindful about checking in, but I have noticed that bringing a container to collect litter means I can pick up more as I am out and about.

How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

By being active in the community and leading by example on picking up litter, it makes me feel better knowing I am doing my small part to help keep the planet a little cleaner. It may not seem like much, but when others follow the example, the positive changes are amazing!

What are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?

Soap/Shampoo/and Conditioner bars have less packaging than liquid versions, the don't contain added water = less carbon footprint for shipping, they don't contain detergents and other chemicals, they require less water to clean and rinse, and tend to last longer than liquid versions.
