Sally's actions
Bedroom
Catch Those Microfibers
I will use a microfiber catcher in my laundry, or install a microfiber filter for my washing machine.
Kitchen
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Kitchen
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Kitchen
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Kitchen
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 2 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Kitchen
Better Gum
I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Bathroom
DIY ROOM SPRAY
Instead of aerosol air fresheners or plastic bottles of room spray, I keep my lemon or orange peels in the freezer. If i want a bit of perfume in the air, I boil the citrus scraps in a simmer pot.
Kitchen
RESUSABLE PAPER TOWELS
I invested in reusable paper towels instead of the paper kind for kitchen and food prep. This cuts out the plastic wrapper and means there's less paper waste
Bathroom
RESUABLE MAKEUP WIPES
I use old cotton shirts as reusable makeup wipes by cutting into squares, stitching the edges, and storing in a jar of soapy water. At the end of the week, I wash and refill them back into the jar to use again and again
Kitchen
BYO Containers
I bring my own tupperware containers to the butcher or fish market to save the plastic bag and paper wrapper
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Family + Pets
Discover Together
I will spend 10 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Family + Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 10 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHow does buying used differ from buying new? How does each purchasing decision make you feel?
Sally Dunkerley 7/30/2023 10:57 PMI got sick of washing up my cats dinner plate every night (I don't run my dishwasher every day so the things i use daily need to be washed by hand). I retired some old rice bowls to be used for this purpose instead of buying a new item. It feels great to be avoiding an unnecessary purchase and to give a use to something that would otherwise be collecting dust. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyHow has learning about the history of single-use plastic shifted your mindset on plastics and their function within society?
Sally Dunkerley 7/30/2023 10:53 PMIt was mind blowing for me to learn that we have had 'biodegradable' plastic bags since long before i was born, and we still get fooled by this marketing.
The war on waste and plastic in particular seems like a new thing sometimes, but it seems we have been aware of the impact of plastic waste for such along time. It makes me wonder how after all this time, plastic is still such an issue for us, and why so many of us still don't care. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Sally Dunkerley 7/30/2023 10:48 PMMy biggest concern is that the 'sustainable switches' I make fix one problem by creating another. (eg. I switched out animal proteins for plant proteins and learnt about the impact of soy farming on the amazon. Or switching to an EV and learning about what lithium mining for EV batteries is doing to communities and environments around the world). My biggest concern is that I have done something with good intentions and created more issues. I think the answer is to research extensively before making any switches or decisions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow easy was this swap for you? Did you have any concerns before making it?
Sally Dunkerley 7/30/2023 4:24 PMI see reusable or compostable washing up tools everywhere now, the only reason i haven't invested in some sooner is because i had a plastic-handled dish sponge I've been using for years. While it still doesn't need to be replaced yet, I found compostable sponges that fit onto the handle, so i can at least make this switch for now! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomWhich microfiber solution did you choose? How has it changed your laundry routine?
Sally Dunkerley 7/30/2023 4:20 PMI was cleaning out my laundry cupboard and found a microfibre filter for the washing machine that the installer never attached. I hooked it up to the machine and hope to see it catch debris that would otherwise end up in waterways. I've avoided polyester and acrylic etc in my clothing for a long time, but it can still end up in seams and trims of some items. I'll be interested to see how much gets filtered out! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWas this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?
Sally Dunkerley 7/30/2023 4:10 PMI drove down to the snow with my brothers, sister and all our partners. I packed some mandarins that i peeled at home (so i could ensure the peels were composted), and a lunchbox of cookies and crackers i had made at home. It was enough for a road snack for all of us, and meant we could stop anywhere we felt like it, rather than seeking out a town with a grocery store for a rest break. When travelling, you really see the beauty of the environment and it is the best motivation to continue protecting it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Sally Dunkerley 7/20/2023 6:24 PMAt my local shopping arcade they had a sustainable goods freebie week. I live right beside protected bushland so its a lot of responsibility to keep litter and garbage at bay, and this was one of the community initiatives. They were giving away reusable straws, mesh grocery bags, keep cups and more.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?
Sally Dunkerley 7/18/2023 5:31 PMI was surprised about my eco footprint results, it was estimated we would need 1.6 earths to support humanity if everyone lived like me. To me, this means that despite my best efforts, my lifestyle is putting strain on the environment. I went about a year with 'zero waste' living, and at the end, opted for a 'low waste', 'do the best you can' lifestyle instead. Now i'm wondering if thats enough! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWhy do you chew gum? What habits could replace and meet your reasons for chewing gum?
Sally Dunkerley 7/17/2023 10:35 PMI chew gum because i like the minty taste. I chew a brand called 'True Gum' that is biodegradable and plastic free. But i also do mints if i can't find it in store-
Rowena Sy 7/17/2023 11:37 PMOhhh I've never heard of True Gum, but will keep this as an option! I decided to opt out of gum altogether but I may want to munch on something eventually...

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?
Sally Dunkerley 7/10/2023 8:41 PMFruit and veg snacks are more nutritious, often cheaper and more satiating alternatives to packaged snacks
