I was volunteering at summer school earlier this week and noticed how many straws and plastic utensils were being used, or not even used but thrown away because the package was opened for just the straw. I spoke to another volunteer, who said that the kids much prefer drinking milk with straws. Not sure what I can do here.

Maybe you could donate paper straws. That way they wouldnt need the utensils since they aren’t using them anyway and paper straws are more eco friendly
You could also write letters to the milk companies to see if they could repackage the milk to include a paper straw like sone juice boxes

My family saves old plastic produce bags to use as garbage bags, but I've realized we don't use them as fast as we get new ones. So, I've started to bring the old bags back to reuse. What should we do after we run out of bags for the trash?

I mostly buy produce loose (gonna wash it when I get home anyway) or in reusable mesh produce bags when I remember to grab them along with the reusable shopping bags I always have
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family + Pets
Does making your own pet food seem like a habit you can keep up in the long term? What else can you do to reduce your use of plastic packaging that can come from taking care of your pet's needs?

    pekin duck's avatar
    pekin duck 7/04/2023 11:16 AM
Yes - it also cuts down on food waste in our home. Overall, our pet care practices are pretty sustainable now.

Another great thing about pets (amongst all the other great things), they don’t care about “popular brands” or worry about what tv advertisers say, they just like what tastes good!!!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study
What did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?

    pekin duck's avatar
    pekin duck 7/04/2023 11:14 AM
I wasn't surprised with my overall footprint. Now that I know housing and electricity make up a large part of my ecological footprint, we can source more electricity from renewable sources and gradually replace appliances with more energy efficient ones.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

    pekin duck's avatar
    pekin duck 7/01/2023 5:09 PM
Bringing containers to restaurants for taking leftovers, instead of asking for disposables.

    • Debra Debra Lee Norton Wear's avatar
Debra Debra Lee Norton Wear 7/05/2023 10:40 AM
I am going to try to follow that example n bring my own reusables for leftovers. I’m glad you haven’t gotten resistance from the restaurants

    • pekin duck's avatar
      pekin duck 7/02/2023 7:27 AM
I have! Mainly at more casual places, like IHOP, a pho restaurant near my house. For cleanliness reasons, it's better to do this yourself, after the food is at the table. I don't think restaurants would pack food into the container for you, because they can't be sure about sanitation (similar reason to not being able to bring your own lunch trays to school in my county).

    • Debra Debra Lee Norton Wear's avatar
Debra Debra Lee Norton Wear 7/01/2023 9:46 PM
Have you tried this? I wonder if restaurants have a policy against this ? It is a good idea if it is allowed
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
Have you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.

    pekin duck's avatar
    pekin duck 7/01/2023 5:06 PM
I notice that some people bring reusable straws to restaurants or just drink directly from the glass.

    • Debra Debra Lee Norton Wear's avatar

A lot of places are banning straws too. I wonder how many restaurants would object to our bringing our own reusable mug many of which have built in straws.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
Since the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?

    pekin duck's avatar
    pekin duck 7/01/2023 5:05 PM
I pack a water bottle in most cases, to be safe. This often means that I need to carry a bag when I go out, but that's usually a minor inconvenience.

    • Debra Debra Lee Norton Wear's avatar
Debra Debra Lee Norton Wear 7/01/2023 9:44 PM
I am really good about carrying a reusable mug when I volunteer at the aquarium. I am not so good at doing so at work. I am trying to commit to using a reusable mug at work during the month of July. Hopefully this will help me create a habit
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

    pekin duck's avatar
    pekin duck 7/01/2023 5:03 PM
Even when buying fruits and vegetables, shoppers use plastic because of the bags they are placed in. I'm trying to reuse bags for holding produce specifically (I already use reusable shopping bags in general)

Many grocery stores are moving away from plastic bags in favor of paper or reusable bags. We can all do our part using reusable bags as much as possible
