Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.

I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors.

Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.

Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 20 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.

I will spend 15 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Community
Support a Sharing Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.

Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 15 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?
Shelly Drummond 7/31/2023 6:00 PMI learned that women are disproportionately likely to suffer from plastic toxicity which is incredibly frustrating and demoralizing. However, I also watched an inspiring video on Nzambi Matee who makes pavers out of plastic waste and was a 'Young Champion of the Earth' Award winner. As she says, "You have to be True to your Why." -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Shelly Drummond 7/31/2023 12:44 PMThe benefits of a sharing economy are sharing resources and reducing waste. By sharing our unused stuff we are keeping items out of the dump and avoiding unnecessary upurchasing. It is a more responsible use of our resources. Today, I took the time to learn how to and repair an old notebook for my daughter that can be used at college. -
Shelly Drummond 7/31/2023 12:32 PMI've had a good month, after a bit of a slow start. My household has made some changes which I hope will make maintaining this momentum easier. We have some natural cleaners, I've switched to a metal razor, and I've invested in more loose leaf tea. I've gotten into the habit of carrrying a reusable restaurant leftovers to go container with me in the car. All in all, this annual audit of sorts has kept me motivated. I'm hoping to continue fresh food preparation going forward, and I'll catch up on a couple of my outstanding goals in the next month! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Shelly Drummond 7/30/2023 8:34 AMI want to have a gentler effect on the planet, but honestly what concerns me the most is the capitalist manipulation of our daily activities to feed profits. There is no need for our dependence on single use plastics. We have been taught this pattern through greenwashing and product pushing. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomThe simple act of hang drying your laundry can be an act of mindfulness. Where else in your daily routine can you make mindfulness a practice?
Shelly Drummond 7/30/2023 8:27 AMWe use the sun to dry clothes often, so this was a matter of adding more space for clothes. I've found daily routine is enhanced by convenience. Taking the time to set myself up for success will help me leave a softer footprint when doing laundry, preparing coffee and tea, and cleaning up around the house. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?
Shelly Drummond 7/30/2023 8:22 AMI'm hoping the biggest difference is sprayers that work! I am really just using vinegar and occasional bleach with glass containers and bamboo scrubbers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyHow has learning about the history of single-use plastic shifted your mindset on plastics and their function within society?
Shelly Drummond 7/29/2023 5:19 PMI found it shocking that Kroger, my grocery story in the 70s, was one of the first promoters of plastic bags. My mind set was pretty shifted to begin with but it's horrifying to identify that direct a link to the single use plastic industry. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?
Shelly Drummond 7/29/2023 5:15 PMMicroplastics are ubiquitous and it isn't breaking down, it's become part of our water, food, even in the air we breath. So, yes, plastic affects humans, animals, communities and the environment. I live within 2 miles of a plastic container factory. Ouch. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?
Shelly Drummond 7/28/2023 5:46 PMTo begin with, it was absolutely marketing shenanigans. They decide to sell pnk plastic safety razors and convince women to shave against the grain so they use it often and buy more. (Not to mention the shaving to begin with!) No, it wasn't needed and yes it is just a way to sell more plastic things to women. I'm totally into the new razor. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityIn what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?
Shelly Drummond 7/28/2023 5:37 PMIt is an effective tool for sharing my values with friends but fortunately or unfortunately it is also a bubble.
