Kelly's actions
Community
Donate Zero Waste Period Products
I will donate 1 zero waste period kits to young people with periods so that they can reduce their waste and the financial burden of menstruation while continuing their education.
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Community
Advocate for Plastic-Free Dining
I will talk to the owner or manager of a restaurant I frequent to request that they reduce their use of single-use and disposable plastics.
Community
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.
Community
Write Letters, Emails or Sign Petitions
I will write or sign 1 letters, emails or petitions per day to advocate for plastic-free or planet-friendly policies.
Kitchen
Try a New Recipe
I will try new recipe(s) or food preparation method(s) each day, such as canning, pickling, making yogurt, or baking granola bars or bread.
Kitchen
Buy local foods
Plasticulture is a huge source of plastic waste globally, I will purchase local produce that I know has not been grown with plastic barriers.
Bedroom
Use less (or no) laundry detergent
Many laundry detergents contain microplastics and detergent increases the shed of microplastics from synthetic materials. Plus many fabrics are over saturated with detergent and could benefit from a detergent free wash with just vinegar every now and then. I will skip the detergent every other wash.
Bathroom
That Was a Close Shave
I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors.
Study
Sustainability Social Hour
I will attend the July Sustainability Social Hour with OKC Beautiful to connect with more like minded individuals and to learn more about how to help educate about environmental issues.
Community
Reduced waste neighborhood party
Every July my neighborhood throws a party, and this year I'm helping plan! I will make sure we have compostable and recyclable party supplies and make sure the materials are disposed of properly.
Kitchen
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunitySingle use plastics have become normalized in our society to the point that most people don't see them as a problem. What would you say to a friend, colleague, or family member who may not understand why these disposables are an issue?
Kelly Dillow 7/31/2023 7:33 AMI think it depends on the person and what type of reasons are persuasive to them, but there is so much harm from plastics and so many benefits to alternatives that there are many different ways to approach those conversations. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Kelly Dillow 7/26/2023 7:59 AMI think it mostly makes me annoyed at the overabundance of single use items. I also like to think it makes walks more enjoyable for my neighbors, so in that way I feel connected to my community.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenDo an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?
Kelly Dillow 7/25/2023 9:51 AMMost of my single use plastics come from food. When I tried to cook a plastic free meal I had to set boundaries around it otherwise it is pretty much impossible, but it was a good reminder to be more conscious about my purchases.-
Shannon Charles-Ray 7/27/2023 7:13 PMI agree! A really difficult part of this challenge was the plastic free meal— I really struggled and had to switch options quite a few times. An eye-opener!!

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems - like plastic pollution - differently?
Kelly Dillow 7/21/2023 12:10 PMHuge system problems need tons of answers, in the case of plastics there are as many answers as there are people. Creativity is essential to get a lot of different solutions to such a massive and pervasive problem. -
Kelly Dillow 7/05/2023 11:53 AMIf one of your action items was sustainable suds, the OKC Beautiful workshop on soap making is perfect for you (or anyone interested in learning to make their own soap).

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow do you feel about being more involved in the food preparation process? Joyful, overwhelmed, engaged, empowered? What are the benefits of choosing to process or produce your own food instead of buying it pre-processed?
Kelly Dillow 7/05/2023 11:49 AMToday I made my own oat milk for my smoothie. It wasn't that hard and tasted fine. I think that I feel resentful about making my own food and somewhat guilty because I feel like as a true sustainability lover I'm supposed to love that because there are environmental and health benefits from it. But I do not love it. I think supporting sustainable agriculture and food choices when OTHERS make them is the path for me.-
Sam Peterson 7/05/2023 12:58 PMSo valid! We don't all always have the time, resources, or energy to make everything from scratch. While consumers can certainly do their part, more onus needs to be on the manufacturers and systems that are harming the planet. -
Krystina Jarvis 7/05/2023 12:20 PMHonestly, this is a GREAT thing to recognize! We have to make sure that our sustainability actions are sustainable for ourselves, too, because otherwise we won't be able to stick to them long-term. Recognizing what you don't love (and especially what you resent) is a super important part of this journey. Keep up the great work!

Kelly Dillow 6/30/2023 9:42 AMOne more day until the challenge starts! What are you all excited about? Are you dreading anything? I am most excited about buying only what I need, and the challenge I'm dreading is cooking plastic free meals. I hate cooking and rely a lot on bagged veggies, so this is probably the push I need to do better.-
Amalia Friess 7/01/2023 5:52 PMKeep us updated on the yogurt, Krystina! I've also always been intrigued by homemade yogurt but have yet to try it. -
Michelle Grun 6/30/2023 6:36 PMThis week I made my first plastic free meal - it was so much harder than I thought it would be! But I like what you see: it’s the push I need to do better. -
Myke Garcia 6/30/2023 2:20 PMWe've been watching our food waste at home; so trying the new recipes task is a bit daunting. I don't like cooking either, but maybe I can find a way to love it with this challenge?! -
Krystina Jarvis 6/30/2023 10:46 AMOne of my actions is to try new recipes and I'm finally going to use this as the push to try to make my own yogurt... I've been putting it off for years and I'm so nervous but I've heard it's really not as hard as it sounds so we'll see! 🤞

Kelly Dillow 6/29/2023 9:20 AMBrittany the OK County Extension has a farmer's market every Tuesday and it is just up the road from us!

Brittany Alvarez 6/29/2023 8:58 AMI saw one of your action items was to buy local foods. Do you have a favorite spot that is open during the week? I know farmers markets are a good place to shop Plastic Free but feel those are generally only running on weekends, which I work.

https://resupply.market/ - local to Norman, with a small shop coming soon to OKC
https://www.plentymercantile.com/ - local to OKC-
Amalia Friess 6/30/2023 9:49 AMI've been looking for some places, thanks Kelly! I'd love to see more stores have refillable and bulk options for groceries.
