Krystina Jarvis 7/19/2023 8:51 AMI love knowing the story behind the things I'm brining into my home, too! For example, my standing desk was handmade by someone local to me and they were so grateful it was going to someone who will love it and use it regularly rather than to landfill. It saved me money, saved resources, and makes me happy to know how the desk came to be.

Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Family + Pets
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Family + Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Bathroom
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Study
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 2 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 30 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Kitchen
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 2 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 30 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Bedroom
Send damaged or old clothing to textile recycling.
I cleaned out my closet and found a place to drop off my old clothing and shoes that can't be reused to recycle and keep out of the landfill.
Bedroom
Search for used items before buying new.
Look on Facebook Marketplace, eBay, or thrift stores for items you may need instead of just buying new from a store or Amazon.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 2 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 30 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Bedroom
Catch Those Microfibers
I will use a microfiber catcher in my laundry, or install a microfiber filter for my washing machine.
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Community
Advocate for Plastic-Free Dining
I will talk to the owner or manager of a restaurant I frequent to request that they reduce their use of single-use and disposable plastics.
Bedroom
Donate good used clothing to a thrift store.
When cleaning out my closet, I found clothes that no longer fit or I no longer wear and dropped off at a non-profit thrift store.
Bedroom
Eco Detergent
I will use laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 10 piece(s) of litter each day.
Kitchen
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHow does buying used differ from buying new? How does each purchasing decision make you feel?
Sarah Davis 7/19/2023 5:25 AMFor about 5 years now, I've been shopping almost exclusively at thrift stores or on Facebook Marketplace. It is a great feeling because 1) I'm keeping items out of a landfill, 2) not consuming from new resources, and 3) saving a ton of money. -
Sarah Davis 7/19/2023 5:22 AMWhenever my dogs tear up their toys, I just restuff them with the stuffing they pulled out and sew up the holes. -
Sarah Davis 7/19/2023 5:19 AMWe had an in-person work event today and I assumed there would only be plastic options, so I made sure to bring my water bottle. It's not as hard as everyone thinks to be more eco-friendly. Just takes a little planning ahead and being conscious of it. -
Sarah Davis 7/19/2023 5:12 AMIf I absolutely have to stop at a fast food drive thru, when they are about to hand me my food or drink, I tell them no straw or immediately hand it back to them. -
Sarah Davis 7/19/2023 5:10 AMI made homemade suet for the birds at my house. The recipe was provided by Kari!-

Sarah Davis 7/10/2023 11:07 AMI thought that berry clamshells could not be recycled, but looked it up on the City of Raleigh website and as long as they are #1, they can be recycled. Occasionally, they are #6, so I will save those to send to Anything With a Plug Recycling. -
Sarah Davis 7/10/2023 11:04 AMI got my husband to purchase used shoes on Facebook Marketplace! -
Sarah Davis 7/10/2023 10:51 AMNeeded a new pair of hiking pants. I searched on ThredUp and purchased a used pair there. -
Sarah Davis 7/10/2023 10:49 AMCheck out "Anything with a Plug" recycling. He is in the Wake County area and takes almost ANYTHING for recycling. Does not accept lightbulbs, but lots of different types of plastics and electronics. Refer to the website for a complete list, but really takes almost anything. There is a permanent location and there are monthly drop-off locations on the weekends.
