I will spend 30 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.

Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 60 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.

Family + Pets
Rubber Glove Pet Hair Removal
I will use a rubber glove to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets and furniture.

Study
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 2 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHad you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?
Jennifer Daniels 7/31/2023 10:21 AMBalloon releases were a thing of my childhood - we did them in school for all kinds of events, sometimes with a letter attached to see if someone would write back and we would know how far the balloon had traveled! I don't think anyone ever wrote back though - growing up near the SF Bay means those balloons are probably still in the ocean decades later :( -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?
Jennifer Daniels 7/31/2023 9:58 AMEnvironmental justice is a global issue, and we cannot ignore what we do in one area affects others - whether locally or across the world, we have to consider how our modern industries affect everyone. I've lived in an industrial area before, and our air quality was vastly different with an oil refinery 1 mile away than it was when we moved across the same town (just 3 miles away). Guess which part of town was lower income? Everyone has a right to live with access to clean air and water, without health impacts. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyHow has learning about the history of single-use plastic shifted your mindset on plastics and their function within society?
Jennifer Daniels 7/26/2023 8:19 AMInteresting to look into this more. I remember when single use plastic shopping bags started being used and were being marketed as a way to "save trees"! I try to buy single use items with other more recoverable materials like glass milk bottles. I think instead of focusing on reducing the use of single use plastics or putting it on the consumer and the recycler to fix this issue, we need to put pressure on the manufacturers to reduce what they produce!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about bioplastic production and disposal? Did anything surprise you? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?
Jennifer Daniels 7/24/2023 8:37 AMBioplastics are another problem, not really a solution to a problem. While a "better" option, there are many dependencies on whether or not the disposal of these makes it a better choice! My town doesn't have a food waste program (we do have green waste, but yard waste only right now), so we cannot put bioplastics in our green bin. We have to think about they process to create these products as well - growing crops solely for use in single-use items seems like a waste of farmland that could be growing edible food (not to mention the potential use of pesticides, etc for growing those items).-

Jennifer Daniels 7/20/2023 2:18 PMAt almost 3 weeks into this challenge, I'm finding that a lot of my regular practices that not everyone does (like having reusable mesh bags to bring the grocery for fresh veggies and fruit, rather than use single use plastic bags) are good, but even as someone who typically opts for reusable items over single-use plastic items - I still have a lot to learn and changes I can make!-
Jennifer Daniels 7/24/2023 8:41 AMYes! I've had mine for years - I bought mine on a whim from a display at Safeway maybe 10 years ago, and they are holding up very well. They have a drawstring and wash/dry with no special requirements to keeping them in good condition. Of course the hardest part is remembering to bring them when I go shopping, so I just try to put them back into my reusable shopping bags so they are ready to go. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenBesides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?
Jennifer Daniels 7/20/2023 2:16 PMI have a brown thumb, so don't keep my own garden. :( When my husband keeps a garden, it is wonderful to be able to consume what he grows! We often have an abundance to share, which is always a nice thing too - nothing like a home grown tomato over store bought. We also have some herbs and plants around our yards, like mint and cilantro that are very fragrant and enjoyable to have.-

Jennifer Daniels 7/24/2023 8:39 AMThat's true! I had to grow radishes from seed for a science class a couple years ago. I was SHOCKED when they started sprouting. LOL -

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWas this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?
Jennifer Daniels 7/20/2023 2:13 PMIn the past, I bring gallon sized bottles of water to refill our own reusable bottles - and I often fill up those larger bottles at home before we leave! Water refill stations are not easy to find on many road trips, but it cuts down on the number of small bottles we have to buy. It's great that now most airports have refill stations! Just remember to bring your own bottle empty through security then fill up! For years, I've brought our own food and containers on road trips but this is more difficult with air travel due to space limitations. All in all, making this kind of change is easy with planning ahead!-
ANGIE RAPOSO 7/24/2023 7:59 AMI have noticed that at concerts they have refilling stations now...just bring you reusable bottle and fill it there. It really is nice and saves money too.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomOften, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?
Jennifer Daniels 7/20/2023 2:10 PMWe haven't used dryer sheets in a long long time! I think a lot of single use items are cleaning agents, like wipes and disposable floor cleaners, etc. We use them for convenience but don't look at what ingredients they contain, many are not even required to divulge their ingredients!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomWas this an easy or difficult swap for you to make? Did you have any concerns before making the swap?
Jennifer Daniels 7/20/2023 2:08 PMI haven't made a swap yet, because I buy my detergent in bulk and I have a brand new one right now. However, I am looking into brands and other options for the next time I need to buy!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Jennifer Daniels 7/20/2023 2:05 PMI've been part of groups like Freecycle, Buy Nothing, etc going back 10+ years. Whenever I've moved to another neighborhood, it is one of the first things I look for! It almost seems silly the kinds of things people post or are looking for, but what a wonderful resource to pass down baby clothes, toys and books your kids no longer use, find furniture you might need, or shoot - even doing a pantry clean out and offering your almost expired bounty is what it's all about! We don't barter or trade, we offer up our extras to someone else who has a use for those items; they save a little money by not needing to buy anything, and we all save items from the landfill.
