  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Were you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?

I knew the numbers meant things, but hadn't taken enough time to learn the difference. It's important to be informed, since I recently learned how much tossing the wrong thing into the recycling bin can be really detrimental to the process.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family + Pets
What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

    Brigid Charest 7/31/2023 6:33 AM
My biggest concern is the damage we've done to Earth is irreversible. Moving forward, we can learn from our mistakes and plan more sustainably, but that won't bring back extinct species and lessen the pain of wildlife dealing with pollution and habitat infringement right now.

Agreed - and that the irreversible damage leaves a difficult world for our children. Makes me very sad how much wrong we have done that is irreversible.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
What are some of the cases you could make to an employer for why switching to durable dishes and utensils is actually in their best interest as well?

    Brigid Charest's avatar
    Brigid Charest 7/30/2023 6:23 PM
Switching from single-use plastics could potentially save money in the long term, and it's also much more aligned with the conservation piece of our missions statement.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
Have you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.

    Brigid Charest's avatar
    Brigid Charest 7/28/2023 5:51 AM
I don't know about a shift in the community, but it's encouraging to see more people with reusable straws and more restaurants with alternative options, like bamboo or compostable straws. It's small changes like this that will make them more mainstream.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Brigid Charest's avatar
    Brigid Charest 7/26/2023 7:00 AM
I've never been concerned with fashion and would rather express my creativity with words or in the kitchen. If you use fashion as an outlet for expression, it's easier than ever to do it sustainably with all the secondhand options out there.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study
What did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?

    Brigid Charest's avatar
    Brigid Charest 7/25/2023 6:24 AM
I was surprised that my carbon footprint was so high; apparently if everyone lived like me, we would need three earths! A big part of that came from my housing, which I can't really control, but it motivates me to do more in the areas I can control.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
How does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?

    Brigid Charest's avatar
    Brigid Charest 7/24/2023 6:04 AM
I live near a trail with an active association that organizes clean-ups throughout the year. Everyone is in good spirits and there's a real sense of comradery as we help the community and wildlife. Now I want to organize one at Franklin Park!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study
What did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?

    Brigid Charest's avatar
    Brigid Charest 7/21/2023 8:20 AM
There's no creature or community on earth that ISN'T affected by plastic. It's pretty sad and overwhelming when you go down the rabbit hole of what plastic is doing to our planet. By participating in PFJ and seeing the good others are doing, the situation appears more promising.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
How does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?

    Brigid Charest's avatar
    Brigid Charest 7/18/2023 6:40 AM
I love going to the farmer's market and getting fresh produce to portion up in reusable food pouches throughout the week. It's a way to support local farms and help the planet (and my health) by avoiding processed foods that come wrapped in plastic.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
Beyond reducing waste, there are many benefits to packing zero waste lunches (for kids or yourself!). What other benefits have you noticed from this practice?

    Brigid Charest's avatar
    Brigid Charest 7/12/2023 10:10 AM
We went to national park this weekend, which was carry-in, carry-out, and I've never been happier to have zero waste snacks. We packed our reusable containers and water bottles and were carrying a lighter load when we left since the snacks were all gone.
