Beth's actions
Family + Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 10 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Kitchen
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Kitchen
Try a New Recipe
I will try new recipe(s) or food preparation method(s) each day, such as canning, pickling, making yogurt, or baking granola bars or bread.
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Kitchen
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 2 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyAs you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?
Beth Casagrande 7/14/2023 11:09 AMReducing spending has made me realize what is actually a necessity and what is something I just want to get. Hopefully this will become more of a habit and I can save money, then spend it on experiences instead of material things. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHow does buying used differ from buying new? How does each purchasing decision make you feel?
Beth Casagrande 7/14/2023 11:06 AMIt was very easy to find used things for my dog. There is more initial cleaning involved to make sure its safe since I don't know where its been, but he loved them just the same as toys bought from the store. My dog loves stuffed animals so getting 50 cent stuffed animals from a yardsale for him to destroy in a month is much better than buying new ones from petco. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenBeyond reducing waste, there are many benefits to packing zero waste lunches (for kids or yourself!). What other benefits have you noticed from this practice?
Beth Casagrande 7/10/2023 6:24 AMI have been eating less processed foods and more fresh/homemade foods from making this switch! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Beth Casagrande 7/10/2023 6:23 AMI've been using bees wax wraps instead of plastic wrap to store food in bowls at the house. It's reusable and easy to use! -
