Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.

Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Study
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Community
Host a Watch Party
I will host a watch party with friends and/or colleagues to watch and discuss a movie about plastics.
Community
Donate Zero Waste Period Products
I will donate 50 zero waste period kits to young people with periods so that they can reduce their waste and the financial burden of menstruation while continuing their education.
Bathroom
That Was a Close Shave
I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 10 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 15 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.

Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by sharing about them on my social media networks and the Plastic Free Ecochallenge participant feed.
Bathroom
No-Plastic Cosmetics
I will source and purchase cosmetics with no plastic packaging.
Kitchen
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 15 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Family + Pets
Repair my own clothing
A stitch in time saves nine, and mending is better than ending. I will repair my own clothing instead of throwing it in the garbage
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?
Joey Byrtus 7/31/2023 11:29 AMI'm not surprised... I walk everywhere so that saves on gasoline, and rarely travel, live in a small space, and try to keep all my meals to local foods. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat are some of the cases you could make to an employer for why switching to durable dishes and utensils is actually in their best interest as well?
Joey Byrtus 7/31/2023 11:28 AMOur employer is actually pretty good at this; the disposables used by the cafe are all compostable, and there are plenty of cups and plates etc available in the staff rooms. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWere you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?
Joey Byrtus 7/31/2023 11:25 AMNumber 6 Plastic - - This is Styrofoam.
Not only styrofoam, but yogurt containers and Solo cups (the red drink cups), all made from the same stuff. STYROFOAM NEVER DIES FOR AS LONG AS YOU LIVE. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Joey Byrtus 7/31/2023 11:23 AMWell for one, for me socks will melt into sharp mattes of plastic fabric, if they are made with any percent of plastic, so I have to get them from as much % cotton as possible. Natural fibers just feel better than plastic fibers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Joey Byrtus 7/31/2023 11:21 AMI reuse and upcycle old clothing or random items. Right now I'm making so many old keychains, or charms bought on holiday, into earrings; and the hook on my necklace is actually just a paperclip. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomWhat are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?
Joey Byrtus 7/31/2023 11:19 AMI personally think the bristles feel better; more stiff but not as painful -
Joey Byrtus 7/31/2023 11:18 AMWoot! Last day of Plastic Free July! -
Joey Byrtus 7/20/2023 3:42 PMSewing an old pair of shoes with bright contrasting thread - wabi sabi make it messy -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyHow might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?
Joey Byrtus 7/19/2023 12:17 PMStyrofoam is definitely a very cheap, very easy to get product that does keep food safe and healthy. Reusable containers, eg to bring to the store and fill up on your own, while sounds great, is a sanitation nightmare for stores, and for people who can't clean their containers properly if they don't have access to facilities. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomOften, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?
Joey Byrtus 7/19/2023 12:16 PMYoghurt containers are actually made out of styrofoam - actually polystyrene that's not expanded.-
Dawn Hollister 7/19/2023 1:16 PMGood call out! I always wondered why it is 5- PP on the Plastics Chart. I have actually stopped buying certain food products due to the number on the bottom or the packaging. Yogurt is one that I would purchase a large tub instead of the individual containers, if I was a big fan of it.
