Anna Reeve 7/31/2023 8:17 PMThis was also something I realized too, especially with a recent vacation. It’s become a normalcy to our day to day lives and it seems that it just keeps continuing no matter what. With what you discussed, by talking with others, we can encourage those around us to recycle.

Katherine 's actions
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 20 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 15 piece(s) of litter each day.
Kitchen
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 15 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Bedroom
Catch Those Microfibers
I will use a microfiber catcher in my laundry, or install a microfiber filter for my washing machine.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Community
Support a Sharing Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.
Community
Advocate for Office Reusables
I will lobby my workplace to have reusable dishes and silverware in order to minimize disposables.
Community
Advocate for Plastic-Free Dining
I will talk to the owner or manager of a restaurant I frequent to request that they reduce their use of single-use and disposable plastics.
Community
Nudge the makers of your favorite products
Write manufacturers of my favorite products, encouraging them to change their packaging away from plastic. I love some of my products and how they work and want to keep using them - without being encased in plastic
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 15 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Community
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.

Katherine Burgueño 7/31/2023 7:12 PMI will continue my evening trash walks past this month - as well as writing companies of products I use. Most if all, I will try to keep the heightened awareness from this month in the forefront of my mind in succeeding months and years. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunitySingle use plastics have become normalized in our society to the point that most people don't see them as a problem. What would you say to a friend, colleague, or family member who may not understand why these disposables are an issue?
Katherine Burgueño 7/31/2023 7:04 PMI had this conversation just the other day with someone whose staff do not recycle nor see any problem with the volumes of plastic cutlery and paper plates that are bought for break rooms. We talked about how to start with small things like recycle bins being placed in each space and signage encouraging their use. Then I figure we can talk to managers and employees about the need to think about the future for our children and ourselves and how to make the world a little better bit by bit and showing them how small steps by each of them can make an improvement. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityIn what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?
Katherine Burgueño 7/31/2023 6:59 PMI am not a big user of social media. That said, I know that social media, in all its varied forms, are wide-reaching. A single, small idea can mushroom overnight into something big. By strategically saying things in certain places, the words or ideas catch on - just because one person shared them - which is then exponentially viewed. -
Katherine Burgueño 7/31/2023 4:53 PMWrote Proctor and Gamble about the plastic top in their squares of Puffs Plus tissues and the packaging for Bounty paper towel. Their sustainability information talks about their work related to their products and replacing trees. Hoping they will address packaging as well, -

Katherine Burgueño 7/27/2023 5:50 PMWrote Driscoll’s to encourage them to pack their raspberries in more eco-friendly containers. Currently they use plastic with PETE - but still would prefer no plastic at all. Will see what they say…. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsHad you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?
Katherine Burgueño 7/26/2023 4:28 PMI have known about the helium shortage for a long time, as well as the environmental impact of balloons. Will make sure when I am involved with parties or celebratory events to make sure balloons are not part of the decorations - and tell my colleagues why
