Mina's actions
Kitchen
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 15 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 30 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 30 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 2 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Kitchen
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 2 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Mina Brunelle 7/12/2023 6:39 PMSomewhere that is very dependent on disposable forks and spoons is schools and work places. Specifically public schools dispense many disposable plastic utensils. A potential way to convince them to find a new solution could be displaying data on how many of these pieces of plastic are thrown away each week and the effect it can have on the environment. Personally, I could convince my friends to follow along with reusable utensils too! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?
Mina Brunelle 7/09/2023 6:48 PMWe pay less for the prepackaged snacks we are swapping out and leads to healthier habits for all of us- something I tried to do even prior to this challenge. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Mina Brunelle 7/09/2023 6:43 PMMy mom and I have been going out the last few afternoons and picking up trash on our street. Not only is it a good mother-daughter activity, but several neighbors have thanked us for picking up trash! -
Mina Brunelle 7/09/2023 11:48 AMI’ve chosen to pop my own popcorn kernels from a recyclable or reusable container rather than consume prepackaged popcorn snacks. -
Mina Brunelle 7/07/2023 8:39 AMIt was crazy to learn about the huge impacts of balloons and sky lanterns on the environment. And I whole-heartedly agree that everyone should take their time to find out which items they can recycle and where.
