Family + Pets
Get Rid of Glitter
I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 10 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Community
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.

Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 5 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Bedroom
Eco Detergent
I will use laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 5 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 5 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Community
Tour A Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 5 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.
Family + Pets
Homemade Pet Food
I will prepare my own pet food to avoid plastic packaging.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 5 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 1 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Kitchen
Try a New Recipe
I will try new recipe(s) or food preparation method(s) each day, such as canning, pickling, making yogurt, or baking granola bars or bread.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Kitchen
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Study
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 5 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 1 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 5 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Bathroom
Sustainable Suds

Family + Pets
Discover Together
I will spend 5 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.

Jaden Brodie 7/31/2023 1:10 PMLazy Acres had a grand opening near me today and I went in because curiosity - they have BULK BINS!!!!!! I've wanted them for so long and here they are finally for me to be able to buy any quantity I want in a reusable container 🤩 -
Jaden Brodie 7/31/2023 9:56 AMPacked no waste lunches today for beach and hiking day! Less waste and healthier eating. Win-win all around. -
Jaden Brodie 7/31/2023 9:54 AMLast day today! I'm a bit sad about that. Can we do another challenge next month?! -
Jaden Brodie 7/27/2023 10:43 AMConfession time: nostalgia won this morning and I bought a box of Go Gurts. Ever since it hit my fridge, I've been thinking about how much single-use packaging is inside that box. And how it would have been if I had bought a big tub of yogurt instead. -
Jaden Brodie 7/26/2023 10:45 AMIt's tough, bordering on impossible, to avoid all plastic, but I've made changes that I think will stick!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Jaden Brodie 7/24/2023 1:36 PMLead by example! When I saw people using reusable bottles, I got one, and when I saw reusable straws, I wanted that too. When you use your reusables in public, it gets people thinking "oh that's a good idea, why don't I do that too!" Luckily, Los Angeles is on a mission to reduce, if not eliminate, single use plastics so they're disappearing everywhere you normally used to see them (fast food restaurants, food trucks, grocery store delis). -
Jaden Brodie 7/24/2023 1:27 PMThis has been fun! I like learning about products I didn't know existed and trying new things out. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow easy was this swap for you? Did you have any concerns before making it?
Jaden Brodie 7/24/2023 1:26 PMThere's no store near me that allows you to bring in your own containers, so I leaned towards the soap bar option - but my brain took a minute to work out how to best use a block of soap on a dish 🤦 haha. Once it caught up, I realized the switch should be easy. Just rub a wet sponge onto the soap bar to lather and wash away.-
Jaime Webster 7/24/2023 7:12 PMMaryland has MOM's stores, which have dish soap "bulk bins"- you bring in a glass container, have the cashier weigh it up front, then fill the container with either dish or laundry soap, or even cooking oils, then you just pay for the weight of liquid. Hopefully other stores around the country also do this!
