Last day today! I'm a bit sad about that. Can we do another challenge next month?!

Confession time: nostalgia won this morning and I bought a box of Go Gurts. Ever since it hit my fridge, I've been thinking about how much single-use packaging is inside that box. And how it would have been if I had bought a big tub of yogurt instead.

It's tough, bordering on impossible, to avoid all plastic, but I've made changes that I think will stick!

When you forget reusable bags but still refuse to buy plastic at checkout:
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
How can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?

Lead by example! When I saw people using reusable bottles, I got one, and when I saw reusable straws, I wanted that too. When you use your reusables in public, it gets people thinking "oh that's a good idea, why don't I do that too!" Luckily, Los Angeles is on a mission to reduce, if not eliminate, single use plastics so they're disappearing everywhere you normally used to see them (fast food restaurants, food trucks, grocery store delis).

How easy was this swap for you? Did you have any concerns before making it?

There's no store near me that allows you to bring in your own containers, so I leaned towards the soap bar option - but my brain took a minute to work out how to best use a block of soap on a dish 🤦 haha. Once it caught up, I realized the switch should be easy. Just rub a wet sponge onto the soap bar to lather and wash away.

Maryland has MOM's stores, which have dish soap "bulk bins"- you bring in a glass container, have the cashier weigh it up front, then fill the container with either dish or laundry soap, or even cooking oils, then you just pay for the weight of liquid. Hopefully other stores around the country also do this!

Is anyone else seeing plastic everyone... like more so than before this challenge started?!?
