Family + Pets

Homemade Pet Treats

I will prepare my own pet treats to avoid plastic packaging.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Kitchen

Choose Reusable Food Storage

I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Bathroom

Say No to "Flushable Wipes"

Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Kitchen

Switch to Loose Leaf Tea

Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.

COMPLETED 1

Use Reusable Utensils

I will keep 9 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.

    Super easy and way healthier!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
How can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?

Lead by example, it catches on quickly!

I grow my own herbs and have learned about wild edibles I harvest, dry, and combine for tea.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family + Pets
How could you reduce your waste even further (i.e. by making pet treats out of kitchen scraps or about-to-go-bad produce)?

We feed our dog straight from our plates and avoid dog food all together.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
Besides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?

    Amelia Breed's avatar
    Amelia Breed 7/11/2023 5:44 PM
Organic food and teaching my kids how to grow.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
Using the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?

We get water from a natural spring and re-fill gallon jugs that last a month!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

    Amelia Breed's avatar
    Amelia Breed 7/11/2023 5:42 PM
Cloth grocery bags, cloth napkins, mugs and glasses, ceramic plateware.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom
Even though they are marketed as "flushable," disposable wipes do not disintegrate in water or the sewer system, and actually release microplastics into our waterways. How does it feel to learn this information? What do you want to do about it?

    Amelia Breed's avatar
    Amelia Breed 7/11/2023 5:39 PM
We put our wipes in the trash and not down the toilet.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen
How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

    Amelia Breed's avatar
    Amelia Breed 7/11/2023 5:38 PM
Glass jars and home made canning for storage.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family + Pets
Does making your own pet food seem like a habit you can keep up in the long term? What else can you do to reduce your use of plastic packaging that can come from taking care of your pet's needs?

    Amelia Breed 7/11/2023 5:31 PM
Yes, we will be making our own horse supplements too!
