Jacquie's actions
Kitchen
Better Gum
I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Bathroom
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.
Kitchen
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Bathroom
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Kitchen
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Kitchen
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Bathroom
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 30 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 30 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Family + Pets
Sustainable Suds: Pet Edition
I will replace my pet's shampoo with an eco-friendly shampoo bar or refillable shampoo option.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.

Jacquie Brager 7/25/2023 7:00 AMI have not actually been able to cook plastic free meals as consistently as I hoped. I am trying to find new uses for things like clamshells and the handle bags that lemons and other fruit are packed in at the warehouse stores. Greens clamshells are good for storing and stacking partially opened chip bags, starting seeds and art projects for kids. -
Jacquie Brager 7/21/2023 1:28 PMI am still very dismayed to see so many products packaged in clamshells that are not recycleable and seem to have no other purpose. I use them to pick produce from my garden and encourage using them to store leftovers when appropriate but they continue to pile up as I have not found other sources for loose greens and berries. Anyone have ideas for their use? -
Jacquie Brager 7/14/2023 10:15 AMI looked for the bar shampoo and have not yet found one locally. I will be heading to a farmers market to see if I can find locally made products.-

Jacquie Brager 7/14/2023 10:13 AMI am doing great with refusing plastic bags and reusing all packaging that comes in the mail. I always carry a reuseable water bottle and am getting better at seeking our products with less packaging.
-
Jacquie Brager 7/09/2023 5:58 AMI continue to find it difficult to purchase food without plastic wrapping. Even bags that used to be string are now plastic string. When I can, I only go to farmers markets and bring my own bags. I am still trying to find a place that sells eats without packaging.

Kaitlyn Ulrich 7/09/2023 7:57 AMSame! I didn't think of the Farmer's Market but you're right. That's a great place to shop locally, sustainably, and plastic free.

Jacquie Brager 7/05/2023 5:55 AMI am always shocked at how much plastic is generated from grocery shopping and consciously try to avoid products packages this way but it is very difficult. I am also trying to educate family members to at least be conscious if the waste generated by the simple task of making a meal and have gifted many reuseable bags.-
Kaitlyn Ulrich 7/05/2023 5:58 AMI agree! It is so difficult to buy meat that isn't pre-packaged so I go to places like Sprouts and order from the deli counter so they're wrapped right in front of me and not in plastic.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Jacquie Brager 7/05/2023 5:53 AMAfter Covid, most items tgat used to be loose are in plastic packaging. I try to choose items in the largest quantity to reduce the amount and I have been trying to reuse the packaging - especially clamshells- as storage and planters. With the warm weather, I try to go to farm stands that do nit have the olastic packaging and bring reuseable bags. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenTake time to reflect or meditate over your plastic-free cup of tea. Share your thoughts and reflections with us here!
Jacquie Brager 7/05/2023 5:49 AMI do not drink a lot of tea however, it is somewhat harder to make large quantities for iced tea with loose tea, i did just use the loose tea in a big pitcher and then used a basket sieve to remove the leaves for serving. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWhy do you chew gum? What habits could replace and meet your reasons for chewing gum?
Jacquie Brager 7/05/2023 5:47 AMI chew gun to keep my mouth moist when hiking and walking - I have switched to a better gum and try to pre-hydrate better. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomEven though they are marketed as "flushable," disposable wipes do not disintegrate in water or the sewer system, and actually release microplastics into our waterways. How does it feel to learn this information? What do you want to do about it?
