In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

Got to tour my local waste place on base. They do an awful job and I have already reached out on ways to help improve.

I am very grateful for this opportunity. I try my best everyday to make some better choices for our environment because without it, we wouldn't survive. This whole month also taught me that having to be a little more focused on less plastic packaging, I am eating healthier! Extra bonus!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

I love sharing economy's! It's how it was in the old days and should continue to be. We are social creatures and it takes a village to raise each other up appropriately. =] When we have a sharing economy, I think we get back in touch with our emotional wellbeing and better appreciation for things around us.

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

I'm really trying to refocus my efforts on picking plastic-free wrapped items or upcycled items. We literally use plastic on EVERYTHING. I'm trying to get more involved with startup companies that use corn-based/soy-based plastic.

What did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?

    Maryah Boozer's avatar

I thought I had a larger ecological footprint but I was wrong! I highlighted some areas to improve on though, like limiting my car use overall. =]

    Bathroom
Even though they are marketed as "flushable," disposable wipes do not disintegrate in water or the sewer system, and actually release microplastics into our waterways. How does it feel to learn this information? What do you want to do about it?

    Maryah Boozer's avatar
    Maryah Boozer 7/27/2023 2:21 PM
I used to buy flushable wipes for my 5 year old and when i did a test strip with the ones I had bought, I noticed they didn't break apart. My friend introduced me to an ecofriendly brand of flushable wipes that also come in a dry form for regular toilet paper! They are amazing!!!

And the ecofriendly brand is guaranteed to disintegrate at the same rate as toilet paper?? If that's true we need to recommend those to anyone still using "flushable wipes"!

How can having access to zero waste period products help people who menstruate overcome barriers to education or other opportunities?

    Maryah Boozer's avatar
    Maryah Boozer 7/25/2023 5:42 AM
My neighbor is a teacher and she has the task of teaching girls about their periods! She asked me for earth friendly period supplies since I use them, so I bought her some of my favorites to show the class and have in case anyone may need some.

Today has been a good plastic free day, minus my rice crispy treat. I'm trying everyday to think twitch before I grab for the single-use!
