Maryah's actions
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 15 piece(s) of litter each day.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Bathroom
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Bathroom
Eco Deodorant
I will switch to a plastic-free deodorant — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Kitchen
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Community
Support a Sharing Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 5 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Family + Pets
Discover Together
I will spend 5 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Community
Raise Money For a Nonprofit
I will raise money to support a nonprofit dedicated to plastic pollution reduction.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 5 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Bedroom
Catch Those Microfibers
I will use a microfiber catcher in my laundry, or install a microfiber filter for my washing machine.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 5 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Bathroom
Pearly Whites
I will switch to a plastic-free toothpaste — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Community
Donate Zero Waste Period Products
I will donate 24 zero waste period kits to young people with periods so that they can reduce their waste and the financial burden of menstruation while continuing their education.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityIn what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?
Maryah Boozer 7/31/2023 9:03 AMGot to tour my local waste place on base. They do an awful job and I have already reached out on ways to help improve. -
Maryah Boozer 7/31/2023 9:01 AMI am very grateful for this opportunity. I try my best everyday to make some better choices for our environment because without it, we wouldn't survive. This whole month also taught me that having to be a little more focused on less plastic packaging, I am eating healthier! Extra bonus! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Maryah Boozer 7/31/2023 8:58 AMI love sharing economy's! It's how it was in the old days and should continue to be. We are social creatures and it takes a village to raise each other up appropriately. =] When we have a sharing economy, I think we get back in touch with our emotional wellbeing and better appreciation for things around us. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + PetsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Maryah Boozer 7/29/2023 1:38 PMI'm really trying to refocus my efforts on picking plastic-free wrapped items or upcycled items. We literally use plastic on EVERYTHING. I'm trying to get more involved with startup companies that use corn-based/soy-based plastic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?
Maryah Boozer 7/28/2023 9:44 AMI thought I had a larger ecological footprint but I was wrong! I highlighted some areas to improve on though, like limiting my car use overall. =] -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomEven though they are marketed as "flushable," disposable wipes do not disintegrate in water or the sewer system, and actually release microplastics into our waterways. How does it feel to learn this information? What do you want to do about it?
Maryah Boozer 7/27/2023 2:21 PMI used to buy flushable wipes for my 5 year old and when i did a test strip with the ones I had bought, I noticed they didn't break apart. My friend introduced me to an ecofriendly brand of flushable wipes that also come in a dry form for regular toilet paper! They are amazing!!!-
Jaime Webster 7/27/2023 5:16 PMAnd the ecofriendly brand is guaranteed to disintegrate at the same rate as toilet paper?? If that's true we need to recommend those to anyone still using "flushable wipes"!

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow can having access to zero waste period products help people who menstruate overcome barriers to education or other opportunities?
Maryah Boozer 7/25/2023 5:42 AMMy neighbor is a teacher and she has the task of teaching girls about their periods! She asked me for earth friendly period supplies since I use them, so I bought her some of my favorites to show the class and have in case anyone may need some.

Maryah Boozer 7/20/2023 1:40 PM20 Days of limited plastic in my house! Doing great everyone!!! -
Maryah Boozer 7/15/2023 7:32 AMToday has been a good plastic free day, minus my rice crispy treat. I'm trying everyday to think twitch before I grab for the single-use!-
