Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Community
Advocate for Office Reusables
I will lobby my workplace to have reusable dishes and silverware in order to minimize disposables.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.

Kitchen
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.

Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Kitchen
Try a New Recipe
I will try new recipe(s) or food preparation method(s) each day, such as canning, pickling, making yogurt, or baking granola bars or bread.
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.

Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Family + Pets
Homemade Pet Treats
I will prepare my own pet treats to avoid plastic packaging.
Family + Pets
Rubber Glove Pet Hair Removal
I will use a rubber glove to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets and furniture.

Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 60 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 60 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 1 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenBeyond reducing waste, there are many benefits to packing zero waste lunches (for kids or yourself!). What other benefits have you noticed from this practice?
ANGEL Boose 7/31/2023 5:17 PMI feel so much better when I eat leftovers or homemade lunch vs buying fast food. I was able to save money and lose weight. I also notices the trash cans aren't as full when I bring them out on pick up days. I'm sure it has more to do with me making a continuous effort to reduce the plastic in my home. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomOften, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?
ANGEL Boose 7/31/2023 5:12 PMI recently read that using chemicals to clean your house actually attracts more dirt. That it's better to use vinegar and water to clean. It also cost less than all the chemicals I used to buy to clean different areas in my house. It's a win win!! -
ANGEL Boose 7/31/2023 5:05 PMCongratulations to everyone for a successful plastic free July!! I really enjoyed being apart of this challenge. Sometimes it takes a little friendly compatition to remind us to keep making changes. Thank you!! -
ANGEL Boose 7/30/2023 3:44 PMThis summer I decided to start a garden. I learned a very valuable lesson.....only plant 1-2 seeds because a bush will produce an abundance. -

ANGEL Boose 7/29/2023 6:56 PMI had a lot of fun completing the challenge this month. I learned so many new recipes... 1 of them being dog treats. -
ANGEL Boose 7/28/2023 4:49 PMI haven't been able to complete 1 of the items on my list. I wanted to set up a trash clean up. Before I could organize it the month was pretty much over. I've been picking up garbage near my house while walking my dogs. Just a few items a day. I wanted to do more but I tell myself every little bit counts.-
Joanna Caputa 7/28/2023 5:30 PMCongratulations for doing that Angel! You organized your own trash clean up with your dogs!!! Great work!

ANGEL Boose 7/27/2023 5:32 PMI found a cute little shop that sold homemade soap. I picked a couple up and one is pumpkin spice. I'm super excited to try it next month for psl season.
