In restaurants where they offered drinks in single use plastic cups or bottled waters, we took our own water in the reusable container.

In a restaurant we were offered a plastic straws. We requested the server to take them away. Saved 3 straws.

Good job, Dnyanada! The NJ law states that restaurants should not offer straws, but only provide them when requested. Our usual Sunday diner always brings us straws and we always tell them we don't want them. I think the servers are just trying to provide good customer service, but I would prefer if they just followed the law.

Landfills and recycling centers tell us a lot about our communities and purchasing habits. What did you glean from your tour?

Learned the process of how step by step they sort the comingled recycling. Surprised to see that 11% of the stuff is not recyclable. It causes more issues at the facility and adds more work for the workers. Also, indirectly it harms the environment because that stuff is "double" hauled first to recycle facility and then from there to landfill.

What did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?

My ecological foot print did surprise me. The foot print got bigger because of single family home didn't surprise me.
I don't eat meat, I've electric car and solar roof on my house. In summer I buy locally produced food. A lot of groceries do come from more that 200 miles away because I live in North America. Trying hard to reduce the footprint.

It's challenging living in a first world country and trying to reduce our ecological footprint. I'm going to use the calculator to see what my damage is.

I do the same, Dnyanada! It's a simple thing to do, but has a positive environmental impact.

Talked to a neighbor about responsible recycling plastic. In my township ,they accept only Type 1 and 2 plastics in recycling. I noticed that he had put in other plastics including plastic bags in the recycling bin
