Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Study
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Kitchen
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 3 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 60 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyHow might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?
Lauri Besler-Kroll 7/01/2023 1:18 PMI hear all the time that the styrofoam packaging is more cost effective but when I talk about the cost to our environment some people actually are surprised that it lives in landfills so long and agree to at least look into a better way for carryouts from their establishment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Lauri Besler-Kroll 7/01/2023 1:14 PMMy car has many reusable choices in it and now I’m getting better at bringing them in with me when I shop. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWas this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?
Lauri Besler-Kroll 7/01/2023 1:13 PMThis was super easy with a cooler and ice pack I was prepared. I booked hotels with room fridges to keep the ice pack reusable and saved so much money on food costs. -
Lauri Besler-Kroll 7/01/2023 1:08 PMLoved this challenge last year and picking some new actions to put in place. Once it becomes a habit it is easier to stick with it. Go team!!
