Matthew's actions
Kitchen
Try a New Recipe
I will try new recipe(s) or food preparation method(s) each day, such as canning, pickling, making yogurt, or baking granola bars or bread.
Bathroom
Pearly Whites
I will switch to a plastic-free toothpaste — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Bathroom
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Community
Advocate for Plastic-Free Dining
I will talk to the owner or manager of a restaurant I frequent to request that they reduce their use of single-use and disposable plastics.
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Community
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.
Family + Pets
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Family + Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Bedroom
Eco Detergent
I will use laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.
Study
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Kitchen
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Community
Support a Sharing Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.

Matthew Benedict 7/31/2023 3:53 AMThat’s a wrap! Not plastic wrap though. That stuff is easy to leave behind. There are so many reusable lid options out there that are more effective. -
Matthew Benedict 7/30/2023 5:02 AMIf you don’t already, pick up a piece of trash on your way in and out of work. Others notice and might emulate you. -
Matthew Benedict 7/29/2023 4:21 AMHard to believe the month is almost over. It’s crazy how much less waste I’ve made when I consciously make the effort to reduce single-use plastics. -
Matthew Benedict 7/28/2023 8:46 AMMy favorite game: scrape together leftovers to design an innovative new recipe. No food waste here!-

Matthew Benedict 7/27/2023 6:45 AMPlease be mindful of what pesticides you are using this time of year. Statistically, the chemical compounds in these products affect non-target species more than their target species, and can cause reproductive defects in amphibians and mortalities of aquatic invertebrates. -
Matthew Benedict 7/26/2023 4:44 AMI like that my job has trash, recycling, and compost bins but sometimes I see custodians just combine them when collecting and I'm not sure how to address that.-
Patricia Jonas 7/27/2023 3:37 AMJust a thought that this might be an opportunity for a "special event" - perhaps pitch this with managers about "what I learned from PFJ" and maybe include the custodians in helping to train others about what goes where and what happens after the employee disposes of the item properly vs improperly. -
Jaime Webster 7/26/2023 3:06 PMI agree with that - many times I've seen custodial staff wheeling just one trash receptacle, and dumping both cans into it. I guarantee they're not separating that later! Maybe corporate custodial staff members have a trash/recycle 101 training when they're hired so they know what is/isn't recyclable, and the benefits of recycling those items that are?? The company would have to rely on a manager that also knows how to administer such training.

Matthew Benedict 7/25/2023 7:23 AMCurious as to what everyone's favorite conservation organization is. My top two are the Turtle Survival Alliance and the Turtle Conservancy.-

Ginni La Rosa-Ponsini 7/26/2023 7:49 AMOne of my favorite organizations is the Ecological Research & Development Group (ERDG), better known as horseshoecrab.org - they spread awareness about the world's horseshoe crab species and how to promote their conservation. They are the group behind the "Just flip' em!" program to help flip over horseshoe crabs that are found upside-down to keep them from drying out on the beach :)

Matthew Benedict 7/24/2023 4:59 AMWhen it comes to AZA accredited institutions, nobody has done more for conservation than SeaWorld. They’ve raised over $50 million for conservation efforts. This facility is the gold standard. -
Matthew Benedict 7/23/2023 6:14 AMI’m not a fan of squishing bugs but the spotted lantern flies are out of control. I wish they weren’t so cool looking or invasive for that matter.-
Ginni La Rosa-Ponsini 7/23/2023 8:53 PMI had to squash one outside the entrance doors at work on Friday, and I almost caught a second one! -
Jaime Webster 7/23/2023 3:39 PMI'm not a fan of squishing them either. I make my husband do it. Saw a bunch on the eastern shore this month...not good for crops :-(
