Rose's actions
Kitchen
Go Strawless
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Community
Advocate for Office Reusables
I will lobby my workplace to have reusable dishes and silverware in order to minimize disposables.
Family + Pets
Rubber Glove Pet Hair Removal
I will use a rubber glove to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets and furniture.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 3 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Community
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.
Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Bathroom
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 60 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.

Rose Bemo 7/31/2023 7:33 AMIt’s HOT in Oklahoma this week and we have a new roof put on - dang, those roofers are rock stars! I bought a 2 gallon thermos with a spigot, filled it with orange sports drink and actually found paper cups, instead of those red plastic ones. Thanks for another year of plastic-reducing reminders and I’ll be here again next year!-

Rose Bemo 7/30/2023 4:02 PMRepurposing Zoo animal feed bags to scooped (dog) poop disposal, woohoo! -
Rose Bemo 7/29/2023 6:49 PMI remember when I first started bringing reusable bags to the grocery store & I felt a little conspicuous, but now it’s normalized in every way. My next goal is to take containers to a store to blend my own trail mix. So I guess I write the tare weight on the lid and the cashier does their thing? 😬-

Rose Bemo 7/28/2023 8:23 PMEvery year I’m encouraged by the effort and dedication it takes to live a life with less plastic use. I hope the effects of the month leads to continued diligence by everyone who participated. Great job everybody! -
Rose Bemo 7/28/2023 8:22 AMI already received my order from friendsheepwool.com and my Busy Bee wool balls are ADORABLE! I used them this morning and sprinkled a few drops of essential oil on one near the end of the dryer cycle and my clothes smell so delightful and have no static! -
Rose Bemo 7/26/2023 6:40 PMPrescription bottles, can you imagine the impact if we found a different way to package meds for consumers?-

Rose Bemo 7/25/2023 6:00 PMI had a bagel & coffee this morning at Panera & I appreciate their usage of real plates, coffee mugs, & silverware. Later for school supply shopping, I was so happy to see my daughter and grandkids NOT grab drink lids or straws at Costco. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
-
Rose Bemo 7/24/2023 8:35 PMSo, the cartons of broth that I use to moisten my dog’s kibble aren’t recyclable. Neither are the cartons of orange juice that I bought, thinking they were a better alternative to plastic bottles. Knowledge is power, so I’m thinking my dog will enjoy some homemade broth or in a pinch I can buy canned broth. I hope the powdered laundry & dishwasher detergents in a box are better than the plastic bottles - someone please tell me my efforts aren’t all in vain?! 😳 -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyRecycling right requires both systemic change and personal and community awareness. How can you expand what you've learned about the chasing arrows symbol to encourage broader changes in your community?
Rose Bemo 7/24/2023 8:27 PMI wish that more cities and states would eliminate the plastic bags provided at grocery stores. My local grocer uses paper bags, but also provides plastic bags at self check out. Paper bags with handles would be a nice transition from plastic to paper. Reusing the cardboard packaging for grocery purchases works just fine at big box stores. Maybe mainstream grocers can offer that as well. Reusable cardboard is a great alternative. As a consumer, I would be willing pay an additional fee for my online orders were delivered without plastic. Although waxed paper probably my can’t be recycled, I bet it would provide comparable packaging to bubble mailers and actually breakdown over time in a landfill.
