Chloe's actions
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Kitchen
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 2 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Family + Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 10 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 4 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 6 piece(s) of litter each day.
Study
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 5 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
Chloe Ball 7/28/2023 11:00 AMI think my biggest problem is single use packaging. I never really stopped to think about how many things are packaged with single use plastic. I am trying to make a solid effort to avoid it, but it can be difficult. I’m also planning on switching to reusable grocery bags next time I go shopping. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Chloe Ball 7/28/2023 10:52 AMPeople are definitely more aware about the damage straws can do & I’ve noticed a lot of places that previously had plastic straws now have paper! One thing I think I want to start doing is having a reusable straw in my car, purse, backpack, etc so I have one in case there are no paper straws available.
