Ash's actions
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 45 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Kitchen
Try a New Recipe
I will try new recipe(s) or food preparation method(s) each day, such as canning, pickling, making yogurt, or baking granola bars or bread.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Kitchen
Swap the Snacks
I will swap out 2 prepackaged snacks a day for fresh fruits or veggies.
Kitchen
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Kitchen
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Bathroom
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Bathroom
A Sustainable Flow
I will make the switch to sustainable, reusable period products.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Kitchen
Glass Bottle Baby
I will replace 3 plastic bottles with glass or stainless steel alternatives.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 5 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenBeyond reducing waste, there are many benefits to packing zero waste lunches (for kids or yourself!). What other benefits have you noticed from this practice?
Ash Avila 7/07/2023 8:25 PMI recently bought a reusable sandwich container with a cute design. I love how you get to have customizable items in lunches as opposed to a single-use plastic bag. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?
Ash Avila 7/05/2023 8:51 PMI love getting in season fruit at the supermarket. It ends up being cheaper sometimes, too, than a bag of chips.-
Susan Rubin 7/07/2023 8:18 AMEnjoying seasonal fruits and vegetables from supermarkets, local food stores and farmers markets is truly one of life's joys. Honoring the season and creating healthy meals that celebrate the earth, the season and holidays.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Ash Avila 7/04/2023 10:21 PMI recently started bringing my own bags to larger grocery shopping trips and it's been great! This is my second time so far for my weekly trip (but I've done it before for smaller, quick trips). I used to be so worried about taking too much time bagging, not having enough bags, awkward tote placement, or accidentally spilling something. It's been such a smooth process so far and I enjoy it so much more than getting plastic bags at the grocery store. Bringing the right types of tote bag was the most important part.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Ash Avila 7/04/2023 10:16 PMI went grocery shopping earlier today and purposefully tried to buy larger containers of items and no items that used individual, small packaging. In the past, I have bought snack packs or single serving packaged foods often, but I want to steer away from them and instead buy in bulk, then use reusable snack bags. -
Ash Avila 7/03/2023 7:32 PMStarting this challenge tonight and looking forward to it! I've been trying to push plastics out little by little (wool dryer balls, no single-use plastics, reusable snack bags, etc) and want to work harder. Best of luck!-
