Jordan's actions
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Study
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 10 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 3 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Community
Advocate for Office Reusables
I will lobby my workplace to have reusable dishes and silverware in order to minimize disposables.
Community
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 10 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Bathroom
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 15 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 3 piece(s) of litter each day.
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 10 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Bedroom
Catch Those Microfibers
I will use a microfiber catcher in my laundry, or install a microfiber filter for my washing machine.
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Kitchen
Better Gum
I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Family + Pets
Discover Together
I will spend 15 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 15 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by sharing about them on my social media networks and the Plastic Free Ecochallenge participant feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHave you noticed a difference in how your community, friends, and family members use plastics since you've shared your own actions?
Jordan Artery 7/26/2023 4:20 PMMy family are starting to become more aware of what products they're buying and using, and are more conscious of their overall waste and recycling practices. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Jordan Artery 7/25/2023 5:33 PMMy local council accepts more things for recycling but they don't have a food waste recycling scheme yet - which would be super helpful. They also can't recycle Tetra packs (long-life milk bottles) which is a real shame as I drink oat milk. Recycling can be difficult when you have an item that is composed of multiple materials and you have to break the item down. If I'm not willing to do it (and I'm very environmentally conscious) the average person is most likely not going to try either. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Jordan Artery 7/25/2023 5:25 PMYou can upcycle some previously clothes by making them versatile and changing them - dyeing them, mending or adding sew on/iron on patches, or changing the shape of items. You can also invest in a high quality capsule wardrobe that is timeless and change your hair to reflect your personal style. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about your ecological footprint by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you? What are some ways you will take action to reduce your footprint?
Jordan Artery 7/25/2023 5:21 PMI've taken the ecological footprint calculator almost every year to see how I've changed over time, but I seem to have stagnated at about 1.8 earths. A few areas I can't seem to change (like how my apartment complex is designed and the fact I live in a city so a lot of my food has to travel from far away farms), but I try to impact where I can. I can continue to reduce my car usage to help lower my footprint, but the majority of my footprint comes from food transportation. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?
Jordan Artery 7/25/2023 5:19 PMIt's such an important but under-represented area and issue within the sustainability space, as not all people have access to the same products that may be particularly seen as "environmentally friendly". Typically things made of bamboo, paper and sustainable materials are more expensive than plastic alternatives. It's a real shame because you want to do good in the world but with increasing costs, sometimes you have to opt for the cheaper option. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroomHow can you advocate for the importance of reducing packaging to the rest of your friends, family and larger community?
Jordan Artery 7/25/2023 5:17 PMYou can have honest conversations with them, take them shopping and show them how many different options are available, positively reinforce and share some of the changes you've made in your life and ask them to give it a go. I also like to share resources on my personal social media. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWhy do you chew gum? What habits could replace and meet your reasons for chewing gum?
Jordan Artery 7/25/2023 5:16 PMI chew gum if I'm a little stressed or restless and need something to do mindlessly. I could swap this habit out for (maybe more annoying) habits like tapping my foot or playing with a pen or stress ball. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWith the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?
Jordan Artery 7/25/2023 5:15 PMThere is way too many unnecessary packaging out there, but also the grocery stores don't make it easier to shop plastic-free. eg, I went to get some nuts from the pick and mix section and they only have plastic bags to fill when they could easily have paper bags. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenBeyond reducing waste, there are many benefits to packing zero waste lunches (for kids or yourself!). What other benefits have you noticed from this practice?
Jordan Artery 7/17/2023 9:41 PMIt makes me plan ahead for what I'm going to eat for lunch. I put left overs aside from dinner and have found I'm using my reusable containers a lot more. It's also helping me save some money by not buying lunch every day! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Jordan Artery 7/16/2023 5:23 PMI needed some new work shirts so I purchased some linen/cotton blend shirts over the weekend. These natural fibres are grown as plants and contribute to biodiversity and jobs. As opposed to synthetic fibres that have a much larger environmental footprint (chemicals, oil and pollution), natural fibres are much kinder to people and the planet.
